Rev. Cheryl Hooten is the Commander and Chief of Dream Day Weddings; and one of the coolest Michigan wedding officiants around. She runs the show, creates all the ceremonies, schedules the Wedding Officiants and handles all of the Event Planning & Consulting.
A night owl who drinks too much Red Bull, a Mom to three daughters and when she has time Cheryl’s an accomplished mosaic glass artist and decorative hardware designer.
“I spent over 25 years in Corporate America and became a highly sought after Executive Assistant with some major corporations. Those years of planning events, organizing schedules for executives, working with sales contracts with online business through budgets and expenses honed my natural detail-oriented skills razor sharp, but working that hard for someone else wasn’t very fulfilling.”
In 2004 Cheryl changed paths, moved from the NW suburbs of Chicago to SW Michigan and became an Ordained Wedding Officiant. One strange twist of fate and a great story later she began to write and perform wedding ceremonies for couple’s who were looking for unique personalized weddings and dogma-free marriage ceremonies.
“Now, I create intimate love story celebrations for the most amazing couples… and I love every minute of it!”
After a few years and a few hundred ceremonies I learned first hand from my couples how difficult it was for them to find everything they wanted; especially when they were doing all the planning own their own or from out of state. Without knowing the area or the right people to call you’ll spend countless hours on the internet searching for the right venue or vendors, if you find them at all.
I think EVERYONE should have their dream wedding so, I paired my extensive planning background with my local knowledge and created Dream Day Weddings, Michigan Wedding Officiants and Event Consulting; to help loving couples find, get and have the wedding celebration they want!
What sets us a part as Michigan wedding officiants?
For starters, it doesn’t matter if you’re an Atheist or Agnostic, consider yourself spiritual, a recovering Catholic or a high-holiday Jew. Maybe you’re combining two faiths or you just prefer to keep religion out of your ceremony; I don’t care if you’ve been married before, living together or if you have kids together. Love is Love.
Because of this, I often find I’m the one that say “Yes”, when other’s say “No”. That doesn’t mean I’m all in for things like teen-marriage, 70 year age gaps, or performing ceremonies in the nude (and yes, I’ve been asked). It means, I know myself and my boundaries, and I know love when I see it. So if someone is requiring you to go through crazy hoops to marry the one you love, or telling you “NO”, call me.
Another thing that’s different about me is that I love weddings but I HATE the “wedding industry”, it’ll drive any sane person crazy! There’s so much bad information out there about weddings, and wedding planning, so I cut through all the crap and dish out real advice, with a little bit of snark on the side, in person and occasionally on my blog. As a Wedding Planner & Event Consultant, I’m using that same critical eye on every vendor I recommend, saving you headaches, time and money…and wine.
I ain’t like your Momma’s Minister…
I’m not the same as your Mother’s (or Father’s) Minister, Reverend, Pastor or Priest, or any other of the Michigan Wedding Officiants out there. I carry the title of Reverend to make it easier for you to find me but I am not religiously ordained or inclined. However, if you’d like to acknowledge a deity in your wedding, I respect and will honor that in your ceremony, because it’s important to you and that’s just part of what make a ceremony right (or not) for you. When you can’t or don’t want to get your church dude or dudette to come to your location, or don’t have one at all – I’ll be there for you. If you want to leave all God’s out of your ceremony and happen to drop the an F-bomb in conversation that’s totally fucking cool, too!
“I’m not the expected boring, stuffy wedding officiant who’s hung up on rules, must-haves, sacred spaces or books; short of sacrificing small children or animals I’m pretty much down for anything…”
I’m up for it!
Although a majority of the ceremonies I perform are fairly mainstream and “vanilla” by Offbeat Bride standards, I’m not the expected boring, stuffy or pious wedding officiant who’s hung up on rules, must-haves, sacred spaces or books; short of sacrificing small children or animals I’m pretty much open for anything you can come up with.
Over the years I’ve done barn and backyard weddings, parks and formal venues, beach, boat and bar weddings, Quaker Wedding Celebrations on frozen Lake Michigan and Pirate Weddings in the woods; I’ve done dozens of Guerrilla Weddings and even a Surprise wedding or four!
Is this your 2nd, 3rd or 4th marriage? No big deal, you’re welcome here. Have kids you want to include, I do that all day long. You want me to dress in costume or period garb, I say – Ahoy Matey! Planning a Zombie or Dr. Who wedding, I say Hellz Yah and Geronimo! The one thing I absolutely can not pull off successfully, is being a man; that’s why I have a Rev. LaVelle on stand-by. He’s a professional photographer, published author, gauge wearing motorcycle enthusiasts who’s up for anything, too.
